Format

A 3-round competition danced on the social floor with roaming judges. Different songs played are to encourage varied dancing styles, and the goal is for dancers to demonstrate partner engagement & connection as well as musical awareness and rhythmic expression. Quality and breadth of repertoire is also considered but not central judging criteria.

Dancers will be required to warm up with random partners. On the first elimination round partners may select their own partners and remain with that partner until they are eliminated (or win!). Individuals are encouraged to enter and we will monitor leads and follow numbers.

  1. Warm up round: 2x 1-minutes

  2. Elimination round 1: 2x 1:30 (first group eliminated)

  3. Elimination round 2: 2x 1:30 (final 3 couples selected)

  4. Elimination round 3: 2x 1:30 (final round)

  5. Winners’ dance

Timing:

Briefing - Saturday 23:00 Pre-Junctions

Salsa - Gautrain Room 23:30 sharp

Kizomba - Junction Room 0:00 sharp

Rules

  1. Anyone can enter (exception: instructors listed on the #JALF2020 schedule)

  2. Individuals enter as either lead or follow and partners will be randomly allocated

  3. Judges include local and international dancers and are only announced at the beginning of the competition

  4. No acrobatics such as cartwheels or throw-lifts - only basic lifts allowed (partners must be connected during any lifts deployed)

  5. Individuals may enter both competitions (they will need to make sure they go through from Gautrain to Junction room after the salsa competition has finished)

  • Mambocity 5 Star Congress - London x1 pass  (use this year or next year)

  • Master Jam Fest - London x1 pass (use this year or next year)

  • HNS Shoes (male or female) x1 pair

Prizes for the kizomba winners

  • Akoma Dance Spirit Festival 2020 - Johannesburg x2 (non-transferrable)

  • Congresso Internacional Salsa & Kizomba Angola 2020 x2 (non-transferrable)

  • HNS Shoes (male or female) x1 pair

Winners will also be interviewed and a short video posted on social media
